Prince deserves to be as adored as Bob Dylan and David Bowie —
and this year, says Matt Thorne, it just might happen

Why does the pop star Prince continue to fascinate so many music-lovers? When he came to London earlier this year for a series of guerrilla gigs – the first part of a Hit & Run tour that returns to the UK with shows in Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Leeds – thousands were happy to brave tube strikes, skip work and queue in the rain for up to 12 hours to see their favourite star at close quarters. You might expect this behaviour from fans of a new teen band, but not for a musician who hasn’t released a new album in four years and remains most famous for the records he released in the Eighties. So, what made so many happy to wait?
