I have arranged to meet Jung Chang at an art gallery without realising the special significance it holds for the bestselling author. She makes her way through the cafeteria, an elegant figure in a blue floral-print jacket, to sit with me โ€” and confesses that coming here has transported her back to a day in September, 41 years ago. She was 26 and had just arrived in London from Chengdu, in Chinaโ€™s southwestern Sichuan province, with a group of other Chinese students, after winning a scholarship to read linguistics at the University of York.
