Armando Iannucci
Scottish born Armando Iannucci is a comic writer, performer, director and producer. He originally worked for Radio 4 and 1 as a producer on shows such as THE MARY WHITEHOUSE EXPERIENCE and The NEWS QUIZ in the 1980’s before venturing onto the other side of the glass to present. He was introduced to the world of radio whilst working at Radio Scotland and went on to write and produce ON THE HOUR and KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU…WITH ALAN PARTRIDGE and is now a regular panellist on THE NEWS QUIZ, as well as presenting a number of talks on classical music for Radio 3. His own topical show, ARMANDO IANNUCCI’S CHARM OFFENSIVE was on Radio 4 earlier this year.
For television, Armando wrote and produced KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU, and THE DAY TODAY and he added directing to his credits on I’M ALAN PARTRIDGE. He wrote and performed in THE FRIDAY and SATURDAY NIGHT ARMISTICE shows as well as THE STUPID VERSION and THE ARMANDO IANUCCI SHOWS for Channel 4.
His latest project, the Westminster based comedy THE THICK OF IT, was launched on BBC FOUR in 2005 to enormous acclaim, and has so far won the RTS, BRITISH COMEDY and BROADCAST Awards for Best Comedy, and two BROADCASTING PRESS GUILD AWARDS for Best Comedy and Best Writing. THE THICK OF IT won a BAFTA for BEST COMEDY in 2006, while one of its two main actors, CHRIS LANGHAM won for BEST COMEDY PERFORMANCE. The THICK OF IT premiered on BBC AMERICA in May 2006.
ARMANDO wrote and directed one of nine short films in TUBE TALES called MOUTH. He writes a weekly satirical column for THE OBSERVER, and a monthly column about classical music for THE GRAMAPHONE.
Armando is currently writing a libretto for a comic opera about plastic surgery, composed by David Sawer, commissioned by the Berlin Komischoper and Opera North.
Armando has won 2 Sony Radio Awards and 4 British Comedy Awards, one of which was a Special Award for his Contribution to Television Comedy. He and Chris Morris were jointly awarded a 1992 Writers Guild Award for ON THE HOUR.
