Alan Riding
Alan Riding is the the European arts correspondent of The New York Times and co-author, with Leslie Dunton-Downer, of Essential Shakespeare Handbook and Opera (both DK). A graduate of Bristol University, he was called to the bar at Gray's Inn, London, before entering journalism with Reuters. He spent almost two decades covering Latin America, first for The Financial Times and The Economist, later for The New York Times. His book, Distant Neighbors: A Portrait of the Mexicans, first published by Knopf in 1985, became a national best-seller in the United States and Mexico. Since 1995, from his base in Paris, Riding has covered the arts across Europe for The New York Times. In Paris, Riding met Dunton-Downer, who proposed they work together on an illustrated Shakespeare reference book. Their happy collaboration on Essential Shakespeare Handbook led to their second co-authored book, Opera, another subject close to their hearts.
