Rory Stewart
Rory Stewart was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Malaysia. After a brief period in the British Army, he joined the Foreign Office, serving in the Embassy in Indonesia and then, in the wake of the Kosovo campaign, as the British Representative in Montenegro, Yugoslavia. In 2000 he began walking from Turkey towards Bangladesh. He covered 6,000 miles on foot, alone on his journey across Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal. The Places in Between is his account of part of that journey. He has written for the New York Times Magazine, the London Review of Books, Prospect, the New Statesman, the Sunday Times and Granta. He is currently the senior British Representative in Maysan, a province in the Marsh region of southern Iraq.
