The Lying Tongue

Adam Woods can’t believe his luck when he gets a job as Gordon Crace’s personal assistant. Crace, now a recluse who lives in Venice wrote only one novel, THE DEBATING SOCIETY, which was published in the Sixties and caused a sensation. It still brings in a regular royalty income. He has never published another book.
Cleaning Crace’s filthy palazzo and putting it to rights, as Adam brings order to the mountain of unsorted Mail, he discovers that Crace is receiving the unwelcome attentions of a would-be biographer. And a blackmailer. Adam comes to realize that the only person who can truly get to know Crace is himself. He begins to learn about the inspiration behind Crace’s masterpiece, and the true story of his time as a teacher in a minor public school where he fell in love with one of his pupils and devised a plan to stop Christopher from being bullied by setting up a school debate that had unforeseen consequences.
Old and infirm, Crace’s dependence on Adam becomes an obsession and increasingly Crace can hardly bear Adam to be out of his sight. But Adam is using his time cleverly and secretly is beginning to write Crace’s biography which will one day make Adam’s name and prove to everyone back in England that they were wrong about him.
As the violence of the past comes together with the potential for violence in the present, the ruthlessness of an author in search of a story leads to terror, revelation, surprise and murder. A first novel by the award- winning biography of Patricia Highsmith, BEAUTIFUL SHADOW.
